Universal Studios UK construction: first partners announced
One of September’s biggest announcements is Universal’s first official list of companies appointed to support construction of the resort.
The 23 named businesses include Bovis Construction, Galliford Try, Morgan Sindall, P.J. Carey, Sir Robert McAlpine, Wates and Winvic. Design and consultancy firms including Gensler, Arup, AtkinsRéalis and Mott MacDonald also feature.

Bedford site works and September road closures
According to Universal’s official project update, initial enabling works are under way and activity will increase as development advances. These early stages prepare the site for the resort, but do not reveal which rides or themed areas will be built.
For people living nearby, the most immediately useful updates concern local roads:
- Manor Road: closed to through traffic around the clock from 27 July to 27 November 2026 for site stabilisation and enabling works. Further traffic management will be needed after that date, with details still to follow.
- Woburn Road near the Broadmead Road junction: temporary traffic management is scheduled for 21–25 September, from 9.30am to 6pm. The nearby layby is also due to close between 2pm and 6pm.

Universal UK supplier opportunities for local businesses
September also brings new opportunities for businesses hoping to work with Universal.
The company scheduled its first Working with Universal events for 15 and 17 September, and says more than 500 local and regional businesses attended the first Bedford event.
Interested suppliers can register their details through the form linked from Universal’s official website. Universal says it will use this to communicate future requests for proposals, giving businesses a way to hear about opportunities as the project develops.
Universal Studios UK opening date: 2031 remains the target
2031 remains the announced opening year for Universal United Kingdom Resort. An exact opening date has not been announced in the official updates reviewed for this article.
Planning permission is already in place. The Government’s project announcement confirms that the Special Development Order granting permission came into force on 12 January 2026.

What will Universal United Kingdom Resort include?
The official resort overview confirms several themed lands, a 500-room hotel, and shopping, dining and entertainment facilities. It will be Universal’s first branded theme park and resort destination in the UK and Europe.

The scale of investment is substantial. In June, the Government confirmed Comcast NBCUniversal’s commitment to invest more than £5 billion during the expected five-year construction programme, followed by a further £1 billion in capital investment over the first decade of operation.
The Government’s investment announcement also sets out £1.3 billion of support for regional and local infrastructure, with upgrades to the A421 and Wixams station among the transport plans. These improvements are planned, rather than completed.
Universal Studios UK jobs: what is expected?
Universal’s media factsheet projects around 20,000 jobs during construction and 8,000 jobs once the resort is operational. Approximately 80% of employees are expected to come from Bedfordshire and the surrounding areas. These are employment projections, rather than a count of vacancies currently available.

Universal Studios UK rides: are the Harry Potter rumours confirmed?
Harry Potter has returned to the conversation this month following a report by independent website Project Universal.
It reported that a publicly accessible PCL Construction project page briefly included the initials “UUKR WWoHP”, before the reference disappeared and the page became private. Fans have interpreted those initials as a possible reference to Universal United Kingdom Resort and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
Harry Potter has not been officially confirmed for Universal UK. Universal’s current project information still does not name individual rides or themed lands, so the reported listing should be treated as speculation.
