After years of speculation, planning applications, and construction updates, Universal has officially revealed the name of its highly anticipated UK theme park destination.
The resort, currently under construction in Bedford, will be known as Universal United Kingdom Resort, marking the first Universal-branded theme park resort in Europe. The name was publicly confirmed today (3rd June 2026) alongside the release of an official logo and branding as development work continues on the £6 billion project.
The announcement brings an end to years of unofficial references, with fans, media outlets and industry observers using names such as “Universal Studios UK”, “Universal Studios Great Britain” and “Universal Bedford” while awaiting formal confirmation from Universal Destinations & Experiences.
A Major Milestone for the UK Project
Universal United Kingdom Resort is scheduled to open in 2031 on the former brickworks site south of Bedford. The development represents Universal’s biggest expansion into Europe and is expected to become one of the continent’s largest entertainment destinations.
According to project documents, the resort will feature a world-class theme park, hotels, dining, entertainment and retail experiences, with the wider development expected to generate significant economic benefits for the UK. Universal has previously stated that the project could contribute nearly £50 billion to the UK economy and support around 28,000 jobs.
Why the Name Matters
The choice of “Universal United Kingdom Resort” aligns the Bedford development with Universal’s global destination branding strategy, positioning it as a national resort destination rather than simply a standalone theme park.
Industry observers had long expected a name featuring either “Universal Studios” or “Great Britain” after trademark registrations and domain names emerged during the planning process. However, Universal has now opted for a broader United Kingdom identity, reflecting the resort’s ambition to attract visitors from across Britain, Europe and beyond.
Construction Continues Ahead of 2031 Opening
Construction officially began in early 2026 following government approval of the project’s Special Development Order. Work is currently progressing across the Bedfordshire site, with major infrastructure improvements also planned to support the millions of visitors expected to visit the resort each year.
While Universal has yet to announce the specific themed lands and attractions that will form part of the resort, the confirmation of the official name represents another significant step towards the arrival of Europe’s first Universal theme park destination.
