Will Universal United Kingdom Resort Get a CityWalk? What We Know and What Could Be Coming to Bedford

One of the most exciting questions surrounding Universal United Kingdom Resort isn’t about roller coasters or themed lands, it’s whether the new Bedford resort will feature its own version of Universal CityWalk.

While Universal has not officially announced a CityWalk for its UK resort, plans for the development include extensive retail, dining, and entertainment facilities alongside the theme park and hotels. That has led many fans to believe that Bedford could receive a CityWalk-style entertainment district similar to those found at other Universal’s resorts around the world.

If that happens, it could become one of the biggest attractions at Universal United Kingdom Resort – and you may not even need a theme park ticket to visit.

What Is Universal CityWalk?

CityWalk is Universal’s entertainment, dining, and shopping district located outside the theme park gates.

Universal CityWalk can currently be found at Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood, serving as the social hub of the resort. Visitors can enjoy restaurants, bars, shops, cinemas, mini golf, and live entertainment without entering the theme parks themselves.

Rather than being simply an entrance area, CityWalk is a destination in its own right. Many guests visit solely for a meal, a night out, shopping, or entertainment without ever purchasing a park ticket.

Will Universal United Kingdom Resort Have a CityWalk?

At this stage, Universal has not confirmed that Bedford will include an area officially called “CityWalk.” However, all signs point towards some form of entertainment district being included in the resort.

The approved plans for Universal United Kingdom Resort include:

  • Restaurants and dining venues
  • Retail and shopping facilities
  • Entertainment attractions
  • Hotel accommodation
  • Public spaces for visitors

These elements are remarkably similar to the role CityWalk plays at Universal’s existing resorts. Universal isn’t building a standalone theme park. It’s creating a multi-day destination resort designed to attract millions of visitors every year.

Because of this, it would be surprising if there wasn’t a dedicated entertainment district linking the hotels, theme park, transport facilities, and wider resort.

Whether Universal chooses to call it CityWalk or creates a unique UK brand remains to be seen.

Could You Visit Without a Theme Park Ticket?

One of the most interesting possibilities is that visitors may be able to access the entertainment district completely free of charge.

At Universal Orlando and Universal Hollywood, CityWalk is open to everyone. You do not need a theme park ticket to enter.

Instead, guests can simply arrive and enjoy:

  • Restaurants
  • Shops
  • Entertainment venues
  • Bars
  • Cinemas
  • Live performances

If Universal follows the same model in Bedford, it would mean local residents and visitors could enjoy parts of the resort without paying for theme park admission.

That could make Universal United Kingdom Resort far more than just a theme park destination.

It could become one of the largest leisure and entertainment hubs in the country.

Of course, while entry to the district itself would likely be free, visitors would still pay for food, drinks, entertainment, parking, and any ticketed attractions located within the area.

What Could Universal United Kingdom Resort CityWalk Include?

While nothing has been officially announced, we can make some educated guesses based on Universal’s existing resorts.

Restaurants and Dining

Food is one of the biggest attractions at every Universal resort.

A Bedford entertainment district could include:

  • Family restaurants
  • Themed dining experiences
  • Character meals
  • International cuisine
  • Premium dining venues
  • Dessert shops and bakeries
  • Fast-casual dining options

Universal has increasingly focused on creating dining experiences that feel like attractions themselves, so we would expect some unique concepts to appear in the UK.

Shopping and Merchandise

A CityWalk-style area would almost certainly include extensive retail offerings.

Potential stores could include:

  • Universal Studios merchandise
  • Film and television-themed shops
  • Collectible stores
  • Fashion retailers
  • Toy shops
  • Seasonal pop-up experiences

This would allow guests to shop before entering the park or continue browsing after the rides have closed.

Entertainment Attractions

Universal has a history of creating entertainment experiences beyond traditional rides.

Potential additions could include:

  • Escape rooms
  • Interactive gaming attractions
  • Indoor mini golf
  • Virtual reality experiences
  • Family entertainment centres
  • Seasonal events

These attractions could help keep the resort busy throughout the year, even during quieter periods.

Cinema Complex

Many fans expect a major cinema to form part of the entertainment offering.

A cinema would fit perfectly with Universal’s identity as one of the world’s largest film studios and would provide another reason for people to visit the resort without entering the theme park.

Live Entertainment

Universal resorts are known for creating lively atmospheres both during the day and after dark.

Visitors could potentially enjoy:

  • Live music
  • Street performers
  • Seasonal festivals
  • Outdoor entertainment stages
  • Night-time shows
  • Special events throughout the year

This would help create a vibrant destination that remains active long after the theme park closes.

Nightlife and Adult Entertainment

Unlike many UK theme parks, Universal destinations often cater to adults as well as families.

A Bedford entertainment district could feature:

  • Cocktail bars
  • Sports bars
  • Rooftop venues
  • Late-night dining
  • Live music venues

This would encourage visitors staying in resort hotels to remain on-site during the evenings rather than travelling elsewhere.

Why a CityWalk-Style District Makes Sense for Bedford

From both a guest experience and business perspective, an entertainment district makes perfect sense.

Universal wants visitors to stay longer, spend more time at the resort, and enjoy activities beyond the theme park itself.

A CityWalk-style area would:

  • Extend guest spending beyond park hours
  • Create a destination for local residents
  • Support resort hotels
  • Provide year-round entertainment
  • Encourage repeat visits
  • Help establish Universal Studios UK as a complete holiday destination

For Bedford and the surrounding region, it could become a major attraction in its own right.

Our Prediction

Although Universal has not officially announced a CityWalk for Universal United Kingdom Resort, we believe the chances of Bedford receiving a similar entertainment district are extremely high.

The plans already include many of the components that make CityWalk successful elsewhere: restaurants, shopping, entertainment venues, hotels, and public gathering spaces.

Perhaps most excitingly, if Universal follows its established model, much of this area could be free to enter and open to everyone, regardless of whether they have a theme park ticket.

That means Universal United Kingdom Resort may eventually offer far more than rides and attractions. It could become a year-round destination where visitors come to shop, dine, socialise, watch a film, or simply enjoy the atmosphere.

Whether it ends up being called CityWalk or something entirely new, a dedicated entertainment district could become one of the most important parts of Universal’s first UK resort.
